The Wise Woman

Builds Her House

A Wise Woman Builds Her House Devotional by Renée at Great Peace

How do you want to ‘build your house‘ today? I read this as part of my study on being a keeper of the home. I immediately thought of my Mammaw Aleshire. My mammaw was a woman who put her family first. She raised 9 children, had 25 grandchildren and was well loved in her community.  She was a wise woman.

The wise woman is one who builds her house. Is this referring to a physical house, an abode, a place of dwelling? Possibly.

The wise woman builds her house, But the foolish pulls it down with her hands.” Proverbs 14:1*

As women we have been given the task of being the keeper of the home, Titus 2. So in that sense I think it is speaking to our places of abode. We keep up with our homes, we clean, scrub, organize and keep it in order. If something needs repaired we either fix it ourselves, inform our handiman husbands or call a repairman. When I build up the home scripture here says I am wise.

When I fail in my duties, the home begins to take on a cluttered look. If I leave dirty dishes out, I might as well be inviting unwanted guests of the animal and insect kind into my home. If I leave my clutter and never get to it eventually the clutter becomes a mess and then just downright dirty. As my momma would say, ‘It went to pot!‘ That’s not good ladies.

What once was a family home becomes a dirty, smelly, disgusting place that most people wouldn’t want to visit let alone live in. We as women cannot turn a blind eye to clutter, lest we pull down our homes with our idle hands. This scripture says if I do this I am foolish.

A Wise Woman Builds her Family Up

Another possible meaning to this verse is that a wise woman builds her house by choosing to build up her husband. We do this when we encourage them in the Word. We do this when we build up their name instead of pulling them down through derisive or mocking words to other people.

“So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;  for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” James 1:19,20*

Remember to choose your words with care when speaking about your husband. Your words today, might be the hurdle he must face in the future when seeking a new job, a leadership role in the community or even the church. If we are not careful our actions torward our spouse can pull down our house right around us and we won’t even see it coming. Just consider the divorce rate.

An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, But she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.” Proverbs 12:4*
