A Family Favorite Meal

Looking for a dinner idea that can be eaten on the go, or at the dinner table? This little delectable treat is the perfect dinner idea. It’s a regional food that was created in West Virginia, my home state.

Anyone from the state or surrounding areas is familiar with this treat. They’re called Pepperoni Rolls.

Although I don’t think any one person is credited with the creation of these delightful treats. It’s popularity began in northern West Virginia. They were created as a quick meal that coal miners could pick up from a local restaurant to take to work for their lunch.

It wasn’t long before they could be found in every part of the state from the 2 panhandles to the deep mountainous coal country. You can find them in most restaurants, road side convenience stores, gas stations and pizza places.

I’ve seen versions of a food on Pinterest called a Pepperoni Roll that looks more like a pizza rolled up kind of like an uncut cinnamon roll. Pepperoni Rolls are similar to a dinner roll with pepperoni stuffed inside. You can usually find them in 2 varieties; with cheese and without cheese, however they never have any kind of sauce inside. I like both versions.

When you need to feed the family on the go, they pack up easily and everyone will get full. They taste amazing and your family will love them.

If eating at home you can serve with a side salad or veggie like carrots au gratin.

They make a great snack for a sporting party or youth event. I’ve even taken them along to potlucks and they are always a big hit.

You can make them up ahead of time and they keep well for a day or two in a zip bag. You can eat them at room temp or warm slightly in the microwave.

Another option is to make the dough and rolls, freeze them before the second rising. Spray a little non-stick spray into a large freezer zip bag. Then in the morning of the day you want serve them, set out to thaw and let rise, then bake for about 20 minutes.

There are many ways to make this delightful treat. You can use frozen dinner rolls, thawed, then follow the steps to add the pepperoni and cheese inside the roll.

Ingredients for Pepperoni Rolls

You’ll just need a few ingredients to make these rolls.

  • Pepperoni
  • Mozzarella or cheddar cheese
  • bread dough, either frozen or fresh made
  • parmesan cheese for garnish, optional

I prefer to use my favorite bread dough recipe which is a versatile dough that can be used to make the bread loaves, rolls, cinnamon rolls, and even pizza.

To bake, you’ll want a baking sheet of some kind. I prefer to use a stone baking pan.

Whatever dough you prefer to use you’ll want to start by dividing the dough into individual rolls.

Then, flatten each roll, place a small amount of shredded cheese on each roll, layer pepperoni on top of the cheese. Then, wrap each side and end tucking the cheese and meat inside the roll.

They will naturally form a rectangle. Flip the rolls over so that the seams are on the bottom and lay onto your baking sheet.

Set in a warm place and to let rise for 15-20 minutes. This just gives the dough a little rest before baking and helps with the rising process.

Place in the oven and bake for about 20 minutes until rolls are soft but golden brown.

You can sprinkle a little parmesan cheese on top for a garnish which is optional.

  1. Being a WV girl, I love pepperoni rolls 🙂 We make huge batches of them at West Virginia Christian Youth Camp every summer and they are anticipated by staff and campers! We make our dough from scratch, but it’s not whole wheat!

    1. The bread recipe I use as linked to above i s a white roll. If I’m in the mood for wheat I use 1/2 white flour 1/2 whole wheat. They are sifter than all whole wheat. My dh went to WVCYC in the 80’s. 🙂
