A Change of Time
It’s Spring Forward Sunday morning. It’s very early as I’m up and about getting ready for worship. I’m tired after losing an hour of sleep. AND we decided to get up early because I have some prep work to do for the Bible class that I teach before the start of class.
Little Man spent the weekend with his grandparents so it’s just me, Beloved and our trusty pet Martha about. We can get ready so much faster, but I truly miss him.
As the first light begins to brighten I find myself reflecting on Little Man’s homeschool Bible study this week. The day the sun stood still because Joshua asked it of the Lord during battle. It’s funny that we as Americans move our clocks forward or back to gain or lose an hour. Doing so messes with our sleeping schedule. Doing so puts us a little off kilter for a few weeks. But the sun remains constant. Why? Because God wills it to be such.
God created the earth, sky, and all that is contained in them. He created the sun, moon and stars on the 4th day. He as the creator and sustainer is all powerful. Causing the sun to stand still is but a small thing to Him. To us however it is unfathomable how that is even possible, after all the laws of physics and dynamics and astronomy won’t allow for it right?
Well in human philosophy this is true. But God, the God who put the sun in place doesn’t reside in human philosophy. No, rather, He existed long before the world was formed from the word of His mouth.
He spoke and seas formed. He spoke and plants sprang forth to life. He spoke and the sun was formed in the heavens to give light upon the earth. He spoke and birds and fish were formed and breathed life. He spoke and creeping things on the earth were formed and began to breathe. He spoke and formed from the dust of the ground, man.
For no other purpose than so that they would choose to seek Him. But, HE gave each man the free-will to choose whether they would seek Him or not.
That is the God that I go to worship today. He is the God who by His will held the sun still for about a day.
“And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Joshua? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.” Joshua 10:13
I stand amazed at the love that He continues to show the people that He created. I stand amazed at what He and His son did to bring salvation to the very creation who turns their back on Him time and again .
