This Week… Beginning the Wind-Down
This was one of those weeks that I just simply love. Little Man worked diligently on his own with little complaining. In fact he finished his entire week in 3 days. That makes for an easy week, esp. since we decided to go out of town from Thursday through Monday morning. So no need to worry about schooling. We are sort of in school wind-down mode anyway. He has completed his spelling curriculum and he finished Bible this week as well. He also finished reading the Iliad for Boys and Girls. So we will do some more immersion into Ancient Greek History along with his Art study and he will…

This Week…. um, I Mean These Weeks
Getting Caught Up with This Weeks Post I’ve missed a few “This Week” postings. These last few weeks have been very busy and unexpected. Of course that throws schooling off balance. We’ve tried to keep up as best as possible. So, I’m sharing what we’ve been up to over the past several weeks. Bible: We are coming to the end of this years Bible Study Guide for All Ages curriculum. I’m both excited and sad. I LOVE this product. I love that I can trust the material to be sound in teaching and that I can adapt it to our chronology study of history. He has 1 more lesson for…

At the Convention
This past week I went to the Great Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was my 3rd year and I love being surrounded by several thousand other mom’s, dad’s and families who have chosen the home education path of life. There were nearly 300 vendors, and a couple hundred seminars. I enjoyed listening to Linda Lacour Hobar, author of The Mystery of History. It was amazing listening to her give a history lesson from Creation to Christ in just 45 minutes. Her passion for world history from a Biblical perspective is contagious. Shelah Gallagher, Ph.D. from the Institute for Educational Advancement discussed Understanding and Educating your gifted child. I was hoping that it would be…

Freedom to Choose
Common Core, The European Model of Education Several years ago, before I became a mother, I worked in a local jewelry store. At one point, we hired a man who was from Belgium. He was an interesting man and I enjoyed conversing with him about his European home. During the course of one conversation we discussed education. He told me about his children, who were still living in Belgium following a divorce. He was telling my how it was time for he and his ex-wife to choose his son’s education path. Not sure what he meant, I questioned him for more details. He explained that as a child was entering…

This Week… Progress
As you can see I have made some changes to the blog. I really like the simpler look of this template. I’ve played with the code for a long time trying to get that banner to stretch across the top or even centered, and this is the best I’ve got. If anyone has suggestions on that, I’m totally open to hearing them. Regarding school, it was a relaxed week, but I feel that Little Man progressed very well with the plan. I’m so excited about Writing this week. I know what a surprise!Bible: He spent time writing the scriptures he is currently working through chapter 5 of Genesis. I will say…

This Week…Slow and Steady
This week at Great Peace Academy, Little Man worked very steadily all week. He also worked very slowly. Sometimes I struggle with knowing how to balance letting him work diligently with encouraging him to work faster. Do I morph the lesson plan to let him work at his own pace or do I hold him to the lesson plan and only skim the surface? The mom in me demands the former while the teacher who answers to the state wants the latter. It is a struggle for me and one that, after 5 years of teaching, I have still not found a solution to. Many times I wonder if my…

Unexpected Beauty at Night
We live fairly close to a local lake which we drive by on a regular basis. Tonight as we were driving past something caught my eye as our headlights passed by. Beloved came to a stop and backed up he swung the vehicle around to shine the lights on it. Such a beautiful crane standing tall and proud in the mirky water. It stood there while I was able to snap a few photos. This is the best of the bunch. If you are a regular follower you know that we are studying “Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day” which is from the Young Explorers series of Apologia Science. So…

Studying the Arts in Harmony with History
Ancient History and Art This post contains affiliate links which are ideal for homeschooling with the arts. This is the first year I have attempted to be completely immersed in unit studies in all topics of learning. I can say that Little Man and I have struggled in some areas (spelling and vocab) while others have taken off and been a joy. The greatest joy has come in the arts. For the first time this year we are using Harmony Fine Arts Lesson Plans written by Barbara McCoy, a homeschooling mom. I first found this program toward the end of the last school year. I was excited from the first moment…
