5 Common Sense Tasks to Do for Cleaning Up after an Illness

  1. Change the sheets. Sure it’s a no-brainer, but sometimes no-brainers are the ones we forget the quickest. Strip the beds down to the matresses. Wash the sheets pillow cases and blankets. Hot water is best for getting rid of germs and if your sheets are white, bleach. Otherwise I add 1 cup of vinegar to the machine.
  2. Gather all of the used tissues. YUCK! Yep, I know. But when your sick sometimes it’s all you can do to lift your head to use a tissue. Often, those tissues don’t make it to the trash, instead they end up under the bed, under the couch cushions, scattered on side tables, in the bottom of your purse, robe pockets, and bathroom counters. So start searching, gather them up and trash them. Better yet, if you have a fireplace, burn them.
  3. Disinfect Bathroom. It’s time for a good old-fashioned scrubbing. Get out your cleaning gloves, sponges and white cleaning rags. Use a good antibacterial cleaner, I prefer Method Antibacterial Spearmint Spray. Or Vinegar and Baking soda. I also use Comet
  4. Launder or Dry Clean your Coat and Gloves. Chances are if you’ve been sick for more than a few days you’ve had to go out and about. Maybe you went to the grocery, the doctor, the pharmacy. Being winter time, you more than likely put on your coat, and you probably coughed into your sleeves, put tissues in your pockets, (oh yeah, clean out those pockets). Since your coat might be harboring some of those miscellaneous germs, it’s time it got a good cleaning. Be sure to read the label to ensure proper cleaning method.
  5. Clean surfaces all around the house. I’m not that great about dusting, but after an illness is a good time to clean all those surfaces. Wipe down side and coffee tables, homeschool tables, kitchen counters, bed tables, remote controls, cell phones, tablets, laptops. Wherever fingers might have touched need to be cleaned. Always use a surface appropriate cleaners.

Germs happen. Sooner or later everyone gets hit with a bug or two. Use good common sense and you’ll be feeling better soon, and remember these tips and you’ll help to keep the rest of the family safe from those tiny little monsters.
