5 Simple Ways to Keep Romance Alive in Your Marriage

▬ Daily Check-in

In the busy-ness of life it’s so easy to lose sight of each other. With work, children, and household responsibilities sometimes you don’t even see each other until you fall into bed, dead tired, next to each other.

Remember that it’s important tune in to your beloved! Schedule, yes, schedule, a time every day to check in with each other. It can be through several avenues of communication, choose what works for you. A quick phone call, a ‘how you doing’ text, a quick Facebook video message. The goal is to spend a few minutes checking in with and focusing on each other.

Maybe he needs to let off a bit of steam about a work project and needs your listening ears to hear what he has to say. Or perhaps, you need to share how you are feeling about you mom’s health condition. It’s just five to ten minutes of checking-in to see how the other is doing.

For us, we do a daily check-in around 1:00 p.m.. Sometimes it’s a text or Facebook message and other times it’s a quick call. But, it lets us both know that we love each other, and we are there for each other even during the busiest of times.

Once a Month, Dinner Just the Two of You

Remember when you were first married? Every dinner at home was just the two of you. Then the kids came along and dinner became much more chaotic. But, there is no reason that you can’t bring back dinner just the two of you. Simply feed the kids about an hour early. While you are cooking be sure to clean as you go, this way you won’t worry about a messy kitchen later.

After the kids are done send them out of the dining room, off to watch TV, or play a video game. It doesn’t matter, as long as they are safe. Set up a NO KIDS ZONE for 1 hour. Then, set down to a nice dinner with just you and your man.

▬ Kiss Him Like You’re 18

Remember, that over time kissing can become habitual. They can be quick little pecks as you greet or depart, and perhaps at bedtime. But kisses should be a sign of love for each other and not a ho-hum afterthought. See this article: This Kiss, for ideas on reigniting the romance with just a kiss.

▬ Hold Hands

One of my favorite things to see is an older couple holding hands. Whether it’s walking through the grocery, or into a restaurant, seeing them holding hands brings me joy. It means that in their lifetime together they’ve grown toward each other and not apart. It means they’ve prioritized keeping romance alive in their marriage.

And you can too. It’s a simple gesture, that means so much. When he’s driving and you are both in the car, put down the cell phone, and hold his hand. When you are walking into church, hold hands, when you are sitting on the couch next to each other, hold hands.

The act of hand holding is a simple, yet powerful, touch that links you to each other. It’s one of the ways you can be ONE with each other when you are out in public, or in your home with the kids around.

▬ Monthly Date Night

Of course, you know I’m a big proponent of a monthly date night! I know, it’s hard to keep that commitment. But it’s super important to spend time with each other. One day the kids will be grown and you’ll need to have built a lasting relationship with your honey. Now! is the time to do that.

  • Share a Banana Split at the Local Ice Cream Stand

Ok, it doesn’t have to be a banana split. But, it can be anything that the two of you consider to be a fun, clandestine, treat. For us, it’s a banana split that we share.

  • Take a Walk around the Community Pond

If you don’t have a lot of time, just go for a walk. Chances are your neighborhood has a small pond and walking trails. Grab his hand and take a stroll. Even in the winter, the fresh air will do you good, just be sure to bundle up. And if it happens to be snowing… take a selfie! The lighting will make for a gorgeous shot.

  • Dinner and a Movie

Getting out for a dinner and movie with your honey can still be a thrilling, romantic, endeavor! Reminding yourself of what it was like when you first fell in love is a great way to keep the romance alive.

For example,  this upcoming romantic movie: Forever My Girl

Forever My Girl tells the story of music super-star Liam Page (Alex Roe) who left his bride, Josie (Jessica Rothe), at the altar choosing fame and fortune instead. However, Liam never got over Josie, his one true love, nor did he ever forget his Southern roots in the small community where he was born and raised. When he unexpectedly returns to his hometown for the funeral of his high school best friend, Liam is suddenly faced with the consequences of all that he left behind.

Forever My Girl is an uplifting romantic film about second chances. It releases in theaters on January 19.

The goal is get out of the house, just the two of you, and focus on each other and have fun.

While prioritizing your marriage to keep romance alive doesn’t have to be complicated it does need to be a priority. Don’t fall into the trap of being too busy to see each other. Don’t let life get in the way of loving, living, and finding peace and joy with each other. You can decide that your relationship, you romance with your husband is one of the most important priorities you can make in 2018.
