Finding Encouragement for Homeschool Moms

There have been times in the last 5 years that I have felt overwhelmingly alone in my efforts to home-educate my son. There are many reasons why this happens. Sometimes, I forget to get out of the house, especially in the winter. Often, as a homeschool mom to ONE child, we get left out of the calls from friends who are gathering for play dates, or field trips. I wonder too, if this happens because of my son’s asynchronous and emotional intensity tendencies.
Then, there is the downright heart issue on my part of me thinking that no one understands what I do, how hard it is and what it takes. I wonder if anyone knows how much my heart longs to be sure that I am providing everything possible to meet my son’s educational needs, or understands the worry that I’m missing some key element to his learning, or even considers that I pray daily for wisdom and guidance.
Sounds dreadful, doesn’t it? So how does a homeschool parent stay encouraged during the difficult days?
Well for me, I turn to scripture.
Isaiah 54:13 Nkjv
“And your children shall be taught by the LORD, and great shall be the peace of your children.”
Hebrews 13:5
Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
1 Peter 5:6-8
“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
Then, I reach out to my homeschooling community. I have to remember that I’ve met some awesome mom’s in my 5 years and if I just pick up the phone and call them, chances are I’ll have a really great conversation that reminds me of what I’m doing and why I started it in the first place. What’s even better is when that mom and I get out of our houses and go out for coffee, or sushi and reconnect.
Another great way to re-energize and find encouragement is to attend a Homeschoolers Conference such as Teach Them Diligently like I did when I went to Nashville or one of their Marketplace Events. It is in these conferences that I am encouraged by those mom’s who have been there, done that. It is here that I am able to be reminded that I am truly not alone as I look around at the 100’s or even 1,000’s of other mom’s and dad’s sitting all around me. It is in those conferences and on those sales floors, that I am reminded that during this era of home-education there is a wealth of good quality products and material that will lead and guide ME as I lead and guide him.
So how do you stay encouraged as a homeschooler? I’d love for you to comment and let me know.
