This Week… Cold, cold cold and The Goblet Completed,

This week we have snow as the Arctic front came in this week blanketing the country with cold. It is cold too. Temperatures hung around the 15 degree mark for most of the week, and we have about 3 inches of snow on the ground. When temps are this cold, we school in the family room near the wood burning stove. I give up the convenience of the classroom in exchange for the warmth of the fire.
That means though we didn’t have a chance to count birds, which is a shame because everytime I peeked outside there was always quite a gathering of species all at once. Maybe we can get a count tomorrow. Except for the one fun adventure earlier in the week: we missed the aviary happenings at the feeder.

Bible:

The Israelites crossed the Jordan River. Little man was fascinated with the priests standing in the river bed on dry ground while the rest of the people crossed over. It’s a simple story with great meaning. Just as the Israelites passed through the waters of the Jordan to their promised land, so to do we pass through the waters of baptism toward the promised land of heaven.

Literature and Art:
We Finally finished reading The Golden Goblet. The story got really good and Little Man and myself were anxious to see it through. After having found out that Gebu was stealing from the valley of the tombs Ranofer struggled with what to do with the information. He finally determined to follow him. Eventually Ranofer was able to tell the authorities what happened, and that is where I will stop the book report so as not to ruin the ending for you, should you decide to read it yourself.

(Speaking of which: Anyone want to buy a book?)

Math:

At Kahn Academy I’ve had him working on reviewing decimals. Since working through this program, he wants to get all the badges, he wants to make sure his knowledge map is full of blue lines and stars, so I’ve been letting him work backwards. This helps to reinforce his confidence in his abilities. It also helps me identify trouble areas for him. But he breezed through most of decimals.

Science:

Jonathan began lesson 5 of his lessons on flying creatures. This lesson is all about nests. Homes for the tiny flittering creatures. Which is a good lesson for him to consider since it is entirely too cold outside for anything with breath in it. Or at least that’s the way it feels to me.

Writing:

So I went back and started a writing workbook. He really was struggling with wanting to write. It has always been his hardest subject. It’s like he get’s writers block. So he had some lessons in Personal Narratives. When it came time to write something though, he froze up. So instead he was able to dictate a story to me. But that led down a past of a fictional story, so I put that on hold and let him get back to working through a personal story with my help. Next week… we finish that fictional story.

Spelling:

For the first time in a very long time, I heard “Mom, what does ____ mean.” There were several words on his list this week that were new to him. So he spent a good deal of time in a dictionary. I know for most children and even a lot of adults, that would lead to sheer boredom. But not for Little Man. He actually enjoys looking up words in the dictionary. 🙂 To each his own as my dear momma always says.
