A Goodbye Meltdown

I’m joining the Five Minute Friday bandwagon. That means I am I will be given a topic, then am to write for 5 minutes. No more than that. No editing, just free writing. This weeks Topic: Good-bye

Today was a co-op day. Because the day was so beautiful we decided to have activity time outside. They had many options for their activities today, soccer, hopscotch, sidewalk chalk, net-ball to name a few. When the time was over the parent supervisor announced that it was time to leave.

That’s when Little Man began to have a melt down. He was NOT ready to say good-bye. He had been having a really great time with his friends. He was not ready to pack it in and leave. Little Man just lost it! He got so mad that instead of just walking away he took out his anger and frustration on his friends. He yelled, “Your not my friend any more.” He didn’t really mean it, he just didn’t know how to handle all that frustration at having to leave. He misdirected his anger at his friends when he was really angry with the change in situation.

All the way home and then at the house we spent a great deal of time learning that good-byes are tough when your not ready to let go. We talked a lot about how to control self and how our emotions sometimes try to lead how we act. I gently explained that even when we want to lash out at others in our frustration it is always best to treat others the way we want to be treated.
