This Week… Unit Learning
We started back to our formal education this week. I am quite excited about how I am focusing more on unit based learning. Our Curricula Choices Unit based learning or unit studies is using a general topic to fully learn about that topic from every area of learning. For example, this week we are picking up in history where we formerly left off, with the tribes of Israel in Egyptian slavery. As we progress through this part of history we will use it as the basis for every other area of learning. Our vocabulary words come from the history, math, Bible and reading that we are doing within that scope…

How a Social Day can Prepare Children for Christianity
Training Up with an Ice Cream Social We had a social day today. An Ice Cream related social to be exact. It’s just another way we homeschoolers do socialization. Our Home School Support Group kicked off the back to school season today with a field trip to a local ice cream factory followed by a picnic and play time in the factory park. Yes folks! We do “socialize” our children. We put forth a lot of extra effort to ensure our children are learning how to interact with the world because we get that question more than any other question when we say we are homeschoolers.

The Kings and a Queen Timeline Review
There some great Bible based study helps I wanted to share with each of you. But I don’t just use these products for Bible study in my homeschool, they help Me in my personal study as well as in preparing for Bible classes. In addition they offer excellent reference points for a chronological study of history, which is how we study in our school room. Me and My House Inc. offers several study aids of which I have 2. I have The Kings and a Queen Timeline with maps as well as Passages of the Prophets board game. First, let me assure you the author and creator of these, Sherlan Perry,…

Five Minute Friday: Stretch the Learning
It’s Five Minute Friday…. I connect with other bloggers over at Tales From a Gypsy Mama for a fun Five Minutes of writing. Lisa Jo gives us a topic and we write for just five minutes of unedited, free writing. And today, all I have is about 5 minutes as this is a jam packed day. Today’s Topic: Stretch Go. When I learned about gifted education, I learned that I must differentiate learning. That means stretching the education that I give to my child. This involves not only upward learning, the moving up from one level to the next and so on, but also stretching outward. Gifted children have a greater…

Academy School Room
I am travelling this week. I’ve actually been out of town since Saturday, but I preplanned my posts for the week. This week’s “Not Back To School Blog Hop” is the School Room Week. I love my school room. Every year I do some minor modifications to update displays, I rearrange the furniture and straighten and organize as best as possible before the start of school. This summer however, I have not been able to get to that as I’ve been very busy. That task shall be on my list for when I return home next week. School will not start until the 11th of September so I have time.…

I Got Mail
I got mail. I officially recieved my letter of excused absense. So now, I can legally home-educate my son this coming school year. I breath a little sigh of relief each year when that letter comes. I wonder how my dear Beloved’s job situation will affect our school year. It is a mild curiousity though, and not a worry. I’ve cast this care upon the Lord. He will provide of that I have no fear. I do however wonder if I shall be having to send a new letter of notification in a new school district. or perhaps a new state, with new laws. Oh. I shall not think about that…

It’s Latin to Me
This year I have decided to start Jonathan in Latin. I can’t believe that I have made that decision, and yet I have. I never learned Latin. I will be learning as I teach him. Isn’t that the way of a home-school mom? We educate ourselves so that we can educate our children. Much Like Latin, I will also be teaching myself Algebra this year, as I teach Little Man Algebra. I did take Algebra. I don’t remember Algebra, but I did take it. We will be exploring the history of the Hebrews this year in our Mystery of History. I am excited that I am adding Bright Idea Press’s…
