Marriage Moment: Absence and the Heart

My Beloved is now travelling on the weekends for freelance work. First, I am extremely thankful that the Lord is providing for our family in this way. Yet, when he leaves I feel a little pang of regret that  he will be away. We’ve all heard the statement “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” For me this is very true.

For 9 months before we got married Beloved and I were in college in 2 different states. I thought my heart would explode from the pain. It’s not that bad now, I do believe I have matured a bit with age. Yet, I do get to missing him. This past weekend I was super busy with a lot of happenings in our church family and his weekend work was one that required him to stay overnight. I missed him so much. We almost always are together when with the church family and I longed for him to be sitting by my side. Then of course there was bedtime. It’s cool autumn here in Ohio and the bed was cold without him there.

There are many times in the course of marriage when a husband and a wife need to be apart. But I don’t think it’s something that is good for a marriage over a long period of time. I believe sorrow and longing set in. Whenever our hearts are not at peace we begin to become discontent. Discontent can leads to selfish thoughts and ‘woe is me thoughts.’ Those thoughts breed brings forth a desire to seek our own interest. Which can lead to temptation, lust and sin. Because we stop seeking the best of our spouse and rather seek our own best.

1 Timothy 6:6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain.”

For me, I try to remember my husband when he is away. I try to remember that he misses me as much as I miss him. I try to remember that while I am at home comfortable in my own bed, he is sacrificing comfort for the greater good of our family. I seek then to honor him in prayer before the Father giving thanks for the job provided, the work of my Beloved’s hands, the safety and security for him in his travels. I try to remember that his work is because he loves me.

Still my heart misses him, and I long for his return. When he does arrive home I try always to welcome him with open arms. I try to purpose time with him so that we can reconnect as the ONE that God has brought us together to be.

Absence does make MY heart grow fonder

30 Days to Give Thanks: Day 12

I am Thankful today for those men and women who have made the choice to serve in our military both past and present. I pray God’s blessing upon them as they protect and defend this country and the principles which we hold dear. I am thankful that they willingly leave the comfort of their home to offer aid to other countries in need. I am thankful that God protects this country, I pray that He will continue to do so and that those serving will be blessed with his loving care.

Psalm 27:3-4

Though an army may encamp against me,
My heart shall not fear;
Though war may rise against me,
In this I will be confident.
One thing I have desired of the Lord,
That will I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the Lord
All the days of my life,
To behold the beauty of the Lord,
And to inquire in His temple.

Most High and Holy King I praise you for your great arm of protection. I am thankful that in this country you have blessed us with a mighty rank of men and women willing to take up arms in our defense. I pray for the safety of those how are now engaged in battle. I pray your peace upon this great nation and ask that you help those who govern this land to seek your will for the country and for those who serve in the military. I am truly grateful for those who gave their lives on the battle field to ensure our freedoms, to defend our rights and to protect us from dangers. I thank you O Lord, for those who fought in battles long ago for the right to establish this country as a Free Country, a place where men and women can freely choose to honor and worship you without fear for their own safety. Lord, you are sovereign and I humbly bow before you in prayer through the name of Jesus Christ your Son.
