Technology in the Classroom

We live in a technological world. It is a fact that we just simply cannot deny. This year we have begun teaching Little Man to use the internet. Prior to this we really saw no reason for him to delve into a world that was beyond his maturity level. I realize that the internet has many wonderful research tools, but before this year he has not needed them in order to learn at his skill level. I used it often to find needed resources but it wasn’t for him.

Some time in the past year though, he discovered google search and you tube for finding things that he is interested in. For example, he loves hot wheels cars. So in order to find cars that he was wishing to have but could not be found in stores, we would google to find them. WE found that he didn’t need to buy them, but just see them. He shortly expanded his searches to include video game characters, and then discovered game walk throughs on you tube. W

I now see that I need to teach him the right way to use the internet and that there is an abundance of resources available to him to help him learn. We finished up the 1st chapter in his algebra book. I want to be sure he has it down before moving on to the next chapter, so today he is practicing Order of Operations at Khan Academy. Khan Academy is a free online academy which offers video lessons and practice work in any subject and any topic within that subject. In fact, it is so comprehensive that if one wanted a child could do their entire course work online for FREE.

I have also discovered another Online resource for teachers. Quizlet is an online resource for education. It offers Sets of information, including flashcards, practice vocabulary and even tests. It has sets for Arts & Literature, Languages & Vocabulary, Math & Science, History & Geography, Standardized Tests and even Professional Career sets. I have just discovered this resource so it will take me some time to discover all of it’s great uses.

Little Man now has an email address. That just gives my heart great pause. But it is the age of technology and I know it is my responsibility to train up my little man, to guide him in the right way to navigate the ways of the world while being faithful to God who has given man the ability to create such things.

How do you incorporate technology into your school?
