This Week… Unit Learning

We started back to our formal education this week. I am quite excited about how I am focusing more on unit based learning. Our Curricula Choices Unit based learning or unit studies is using a general topic to fully learn about that topic from every area of learning.

For example, this week we are picking up in history where we formerly left off, with the tribes of Israel in Egyptian slavery. As we progress through this part of history we will use it as the basis for every other area of learning. Our vocabulary words come from the history, math, Bible and reading that we are doing within that scope of time. In addition even our Algebra book includes the history of mathematics and each chapter introduces math from a historical perspective. This weeks algebra chapter begins with Early Egyptian Fractions. So I am able to tie algebra into the same unit study.

This is a wonderful way for my Little Man to differentiate his learning. He is able to have the time and freedom to fully study an entire period of historical time. He can see that time frame from every angle, from Egyptian and Israelite history and how they relate to one another to how they relate to scripture. He also is doing art projects based on the period of time he is learning about. From the Israelite family I pulled the theme of family into other areas of learning, he is writing a make believe story about a family, we are reading The Swiss Family Robinson in our family reading time, and he is diagramming the family tree of the Israelites. In science this year we are studying the Zoology of Flying Creatures of the 5th Day. The first lesson is about classification. Part of classifying animals is the group of family. So even in science he is able to see how animals relate within a family group.

I am excited to see how this year progresses. I am excited to watch him learn. While he has complained often in just these 2 days about “having no play time.”  I also am seeing him reading, writing and studying with excitement.
