I want to tell you about the Bible curriculum we are using in our homeschool this year. Let’s face it, there is a lot of material out there, but with so many denominations in this world, of which I am not a part, it is hard to find material that I can rely on to be sound in biblical doctrine.

My family and I along with the other Christians of whom we fellowship seek to only teach and learn from the Bible. We do not believe in creeds of men, but only the teaching of God’s word.

After years of searching for material that I could feel confident in using, some ladies in a church facebook homeschooler’s group recommended this. In fact, they recommended it a lot.

Bible Study Guide for All Ages was written by Mary Baker. Mary and her family are striving to offer a wonderful product, not only for children but in fact the entire family or congregation. On the website her story is shared:

“The Bible Study Guide was born in the late 70s after Mary Baker, a mom of four children, couldn’t find a curriculum that she felt would help her kids, and her church’s Bible class, learn and understand the Bible. With much study, she began writing a guide through the Bible. In 1980, the first Teacher’s Guide Unit was published. In 1998, after graduating from Harding University with a Bible degree and Abilene Christian University with a masters in Biblical studies, Mary’s oldest son, Brian, began working full-time with the company, in addition to being a minister at a local church. Working with several writers including sister and educator Lorie Jones and sister-in-law and educator Julie Baker, the curriculum began to expand to make it easier to effectively teach specific age groups.”

After I first heard about her material I found her website and began looking through it. I was excited by what I was seeing. The material includes a timeline of biblical events that the student builds on as they learn.

The lessons are not written specifically in chronological order but can be adapted as such if the teacher would like to do so; which in my case, since we are learning history and literature in chronology I feel it is important to do Bible in the same manner. So I simply adapt the material to fit our Academy.

I’m one of those who likes to ‘try before I buy’ kind of girls. So I hesitated. Then one day as I was working in the resource room at the congregations building where I worship for my Bible class, I found a version of Bible Study Guide for All Ages sitting on the shelf. It is the vol. 1. an older version from the 1970’s, teacher guide.

I have seen on the webpage updated graphics and materials. This version had black line drawings and was obviously from before the digital age. But, I knew that this older version was perfect for letting me see if the material was going to work at Great Peace Academy. So I borrowed it.

My borrowed copy

We’ve been using it since the beginning of this school year. The approach teaches Bible in parts. Some is from the early part of the Old Testament, some is from the central portion which includes the judges and kings but it also includes New Testament materials.

For us, since we are learning chronologically I simply moved to the portion of Bible that was relevant to the period of history we were currently in and began there.

How we are using this product:
I am letting little man write the answers to questions in his Bible notebook directly from the teachers guide. He uses his history timeline and maps to keep label appropriate content. This allows him to tie together his Biblical history with his world history which I as a teacher am loving. I hope that soon I will be able to purchase the
Timeline and Wall Maps directly from Bible Study Guide as well as the Bible Book Summary Cards to incorporate into what we have started.

This product as the title describes is for ALL AGES. I now know of entire congregations who are using this material in every age category of classes, including adults. Additionally this product is wonderful for family bible study time. Currently on their webpage you can order Unit 1 in every age group which includes: The Beginner Level is available in all Unit’s. While Unit 2 is due out this spring, and units 3 and 4 are due out in the following years, respectively.

Click here to see a sample page of Intermediate level material. If you are looking for a Bible curricula that actually teaches Bible then this is probably the material for you. Let me tell you what all your student will learn while using this program. They will learn memory work, using the timeline of Bible events, they will learn mapping by locating directly on wall maps where each place is located and where events took place. Imagine your child being able to recite the basic content of each and every Bible Book using the Bible Book Summary Cards. Additionally, your son or daughter will begin to learn how to use their Bible in personal study. The guide will teach them how to underline appropriate passages within their own Bible. With the Bible Study Guide, students cover the entire Bible in 416 lessons, studying some from the Old and New Testament each year.

We are now reaching the end of the appropriate material in this borrowed volume that will allow us to continue to work through history and Bible in this way, so I am going to be making a purchase of more of their material as soon as Unit 2 Intermediate level is available in the updated form.

Update:
I have since purchased the updated student pages.

  1. I’ve used this curriculum for many years. We’ve been all the way through the 4 units, and are nearly halfway through the second time.

It’s very customizable. I spread one lesson over two days. If you did every suggestion, you could make a lesson last 3 or 4 days. I use it for all 4 of my kids ages 17, 16, 13, and 11. We’ve used it since the oldest was 6. There have been several times we’ve taken a semester break from it to go through something else I felt was needed in our family. But, it’s so easy to just pick right up where we left off.

    1. I completely agree that it’s customizable and easy to pick up after taking a break from. Those are both good points. We still love it, my son loves digging in deep and really getting to know God’s word and I see him developing really good study skills.
Thanks for your comment. It blessed my heart today. 🙂
