Sick at Homeschool
This month is not shaping up to be a great school month. Starting off with travel for not 1 but 2 weeks and the second being an unexpected travel that I wasn’t prepared for. Followed by sickness, both Little Man and I have horrible coughs with a touch of fever, which makes it hard school. I am so very tired of life getting in the way of school. Would it be different if he were in public school? Would I send him out the door with a cough? No. Especially if he has a fever, the school would just send him back home.I want to curl up on the couch…

5MF: Bare Before the Lord
It’s 5-Minute Friday. Join us as Lisa-Jo hosts hundreds of bloggers sharing their 5 minute thoughts on one topic. Today’s Topic: BareGo.Bare. Have you laid you soul bare before the Lord? Have you poured forth your every thought, your every hope, your every sin at His feet and trusted that He would fill you with grace so sufficient that you would be cleansed? Have you bared your heart of it’s burdens and been washed clean in His waters of baptism? Have you given your heart to Him and trusted, ever trusting Him to love you despite your bare sin. Have you?I lay before Him, bare and pure because of Christ…

School on the Road
It’s been a hard couple of weeks. Schooling when your travelling isn’t always easy. Little Man needed time with grandma and grandpa, I needed time with my parents. Then my uncle passed away so after coming home, I turned around and went back. The first week I had a plan. I knew exactly what Little Man was going to work on while we were away from home. Because he was so excited to see his mammaw and pappaw he did much of his work for the week on the trip there, so he wouldn’t have to spend so much time each day working. On the trip down, the first week,…

Heading Home
I’ve decided to head to my parents house for a few days. Quite frankly I’ve been pretty homesick for a while now. Little Man has been begging to go see mammaw and pappaw. Then Sam at Sam’s Noggin and our mutual facebook friend Brittany gave me the perfect excuse. They are hosting a “How to start homeschooling” seminar in Brittany’s home town, which just happens to be not too far from my parents. While I’ve been homeschooling for long enough to know how this seminar will go, I’ve decided to go to it anyway to see my friends, help support their efforts and some much needed time with my folks. We’ll be…

This Week… Cold, cold cold and The Goblet Completed,
This week we have snow as the Arctic front came in this week blanketing the country with cold. It is cold too. Temperatures hung around the 15 degree mark for most of the week, and we have about 3 inches of snow on the ground. When temps are this cold, we school in the family room near the wood burning stove. I give up the convenience of the classroom in exchange for the warmth of the fire. That means though we didn’t have a chance to count birds, which is a shame because everytime I peeked outside there was always quite a gathering of species all at once. Maybe we…

Five Minute Friday: Again
Over at Lisa-Jo Baker’s blog we join forces to write from a given topic for 5 minutes flat… no editing, no re-do’s just pure writing. Today’s topic: Again Go. Again I have taken on more than I can handle at one time. I do it over and over again. My momma taught me to love with all of my heart, to hold nothing back. More often than not doing this leads me down too many roads at once. Or they seem like too many roads. The truth, my truth is that it’s one long road with a lot of twists and turns in small increments. I’m on the road to…

Unexpected “Field” Study
If you are a regular reader at the academy then you know we are studying Ornithology in science this year, (that means we are studying birds) using Exploring Creation with Zoology 1; Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day. We have a feeder just outside our classroom window. So whenever we are in school we can see the birds flitting in and out. We live in Ohio and the temperature has dropped quite a bit in the past few days. This has done a couple of things. 1. It has increased the activity at our feeder. 2. We are having school in the family room or dining room instead of the…

This Week… Out of Egypt and Achieving Success
This week…. In our homeschool this week I am purposing to add in differentiated instruction as a part of our schedule. This is in lieu of letting it happen naturally I am giving Little Man specific things to work on. I have found great ideas at giftedkids.ie as I my previous post “Finding Ways to Stretch the Mind” discussed. This week little man worked on roller coaster structure which he had a blast doing, he worked at designing race cars and designing a parachute, all using online programming that I had not previously known about. While I know that these type of programs are engaging his need for learning more…
