    Beautiful Tears

Tonight my heart mourns for my dear sweet friend. Her mother passed away very unexpectedly this evening. We rushed to the hospital to be with the family thinking there may be hours to wait but it was only minutes. I watched something take place during those moments that took me quite by surprise. My friends 9 year old granddaughter went to my 8 year old son, he said “I’m sorry your grandma is sick.” She replied, “she isn’t just sick she is dying.” He asked a question and I explained. Then he hugged her ands said “I’m sorry.” Both of these children are educated in their homes.  A little while…

    Difficult Days

Mom’s who are home educators are often telling others about how great home schooling is. There are many reasons why thisis true. When a new concept is understood and the light dawns in the child’s eyes there is nothing that can compare to that feeling. I sometimes wonder if this everything is great attitude has enticed more than one mom to give home education a try only to be frustrated when everything isn’t all giggles and sunshine. Bearing the sole responsibility for the education of your child is dauntingly hard work. Some days, especially when you are first starting out and planning the curricula you want. That is probably the…

    Sick Days

This past week my little guy was sick. Some little bug, he had a runny nose and a cough, but it kept him out of school for 3 days. He seemed better Thursday but I let him rest anyway. Friday morning we got up went to swim class, I got up late so he had 2 mini cupcakes and a juice box for breakfast. That was so not a good idea. Jonathan got sick in the pool. YIKES!! He was fine, just threw-up that little sugary breakfast that he had had. He sat out for the rest of swim, but felt well enough to complete gym class with no problems. We…

Learning outside the Box: Of Pizza and Crackers

Sometimes, we have to think inside the box in order to learn outside the box (curriculum box) to accomplish our educational goals. This week it was a pizza box and a graham cracker box.    Jonathan is studying fractions in math. He is learning to add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, mixed numbers and simplifying. A friend of our, the great Mrs. Wazoo, let me borrow a box game of pizza fractions. It was just the thing to help assure Jonathan that he was on the right track with his problem solving. He would do the math, then use the fractions to check to see if he was…

Thank you for supporting Great Peace Academy.         “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth.” Psalm 127:3-5 This verse is a reminder to me of what my goal is. I often get asked why I chose to homeschool. For the longest time I didn’t know how to answer that question. There are many factors that led up to the decision. I loved spending time with my son and I couldn’t really feel comfortable about sending him…

A Typical Day and Unexpected Learning

Learning to Adapt in Order to Accomplish Tasks   So maybe your wondering what a typical day looks like in a homeschool classroom. We are fortunate enough to have a nice classroom set up. Jonathan has a student desk and next to it is a small table for keeping his supplies on. I have a desk, which is really an old dining room table, where I have a computer, printer, calendar, pens and various other desk supplies. It is here, that I try to plan and organize lesson plans and keep track of Jonathan’s work.     We also have a counter-top with cabinets above and below which is great for…
