Five Minute Friday: Cherished Mountain

Over at Lisa Jo Baker’s blog a group of hundreds of writers gather on Fridays for a writing party. We write for 5 minutes about a topic that she gives us. Just free writing…

Five Minute Friday

Today’s Topic: Cherished
Go

I stand near the end of the holler and look up. The mountain stands before me like a looming shadow of darkness. But it has not always been so. That mountain stands as a testament to a history long past but that changed the country as we know it. Now it stands as a symbol. But the symbol means many things to different people.

Most of those people don’t know, they don’t understand the testament that it is to those who were raised up in her shadow. The world looks in and takes their stance, the town is divided over it and the people wait…

They wait for grown ups, the important people, the aristocrats who don’t know what it is and was like, to make decisions that will forever change the way she stands. They don’t know. They can’t know because they didn’t get raised up in her shadow.

She is cherished in the hearts and minds of those who grew up in her shadow. She is cherished in the hearts of the children whose grandfathers and great grandfathers fought and died there. We talk about insurance and Obamacare… She is where employee health began, right there under the banner of blood. She is where they died for rights. Rights that grew to become the rights you have today.

But to those who know her, who played at her summit, who hiked her back… She will soon become a cherished memory.
Stop.
