A Reader Asks… Should I Have a Homeschool Name?
A while ago I received a question from a reader who asks: “Should I have a homeschool name ? If so, how do you decide?” ~Vicky Vicky and I chatted for a bit and I asked her to think about her homeschool purpose. Then I got to thinking that maybe others could benefit from this discussion. So I’m sharing some tips here. Legally speaking, in most states you are not required to offer a name for your homeschool. North Carolina, does require naming your school. Please check, hslda.org for specific laws in your own state. Naming your school is a personal decision that each family makes. Using a name on your notification letter…

An Explanation of why Eclectic Method Works Best
Eclectic Method is Our Homeschool Choice I’ve broken down for you the various educational methods in the past. There are so many to choose from. Each one has ideas that seem like they’ll work but often holding to a rigorous method simply doesn’t work in a home education setting. For us the eclectic method works best. A Review of Eclectic Method Eclectic Method is a method which incorporates parts of other methods to encompass multiple approaches to learning. It should be noted that this approach is not disorganized. It is purposefully researching and learning about a variety of methods and choosing different parts of each, then forming one’s own educational philosophy…

As my child has gotten older and has been allowed more freedom online to explore his own interests and enter the age of social media usage I am becoming ever more concerned for his online safety. Of course, his dad and I have done as much research as possible and implemented as many kid-safe protections as we can. Still, we worry. We want to protect his eyes and heart from seeing and experiencing things that are inappropriate. More so, we want to ensure that he doesn’t fall victim to online predators. This is a sponsored post about a product which I believe will be beneficial to homeschooling families. All opinions expressed are…

10 Powerful Scriptures for Training your Son’s Heart for Responsibility
With Free Responsibility Scripture Art Printables In our home, we’ve been focused on training our young man in responsibility for his future role as a husband, provider, and leader. Training a boy to be responsible can be a difficult task. This can be especially true for moms. For some reason, boys tend to “buck up” and listen when dad speaks more so than when mom does. It could be this way with girls too, but as a boy mom, I only speak from my own experience. God has created them with a specific purpose. He desires men to be leaders in the home and in our churches. They’ve got buried deep…

Middle School Selections for Homeschooling 8th Grade
I can’t believe my son is turning 13 this week! This summer I purposed to sit down and make some tough decisions about moving forward with homeschool. With homeschooling 8th grade year upon us and realizing that he already has a couple of high school credits under his educational belt, (math), I know that decisions made now will be foundational to where he is in 2 or 3 years and whether he will be ready to tackle some tougher college leveled credits. So with that, I’ve struggled to make decisions about his curriculum. But, I’ve finally settled on this list and I feel pretty good about it. Disclosure: This post contains…

A New Find: Excellent Language Arts using Great Literature
Language Arts Study for Gifted Students As we enter what I consider to be our 8th grade year of homeschooling, I’m beginning to realize that my son continues to need increasingly challenging work. Each year it becomes more and more apparent that he needs differentiated learning opportunities in every subject matter. Yet, I find myself always gravitating to more challenging math and science, and steering clear of challenging him in other areas, like language arts. I think the reason is because for years he has balked at anything that related to writing. Oh, he’s very good at grammar, handwriting, and understanding how to edit material. He just simply has never…

Sparking a Love of Reading with an Audio Drama
I recently discovered a way to encourage my son to find reading for the enjoyment of a story. I found that an audio drama excited his curiosity and inspired him to ask for more books. I’ve often written about my son and how he started reading at a very early age. I can remember he would take his Winnie the Pooh board books and then re-type them into our computer’s Word program when he was so little. By the time he was 3 he could read fluently. We would drive down the road and he’d read billboards, and street signs. He’d pick up magazines and sit and read them to me. …
