Eclectic Homeschooling at it’s Best

This week at Great Peace Academy we have had some of the craziest weather I’ve seen in one single week. On Sunday morning we had 12 inches of snow on the ground. While we were in worship it began snowing again and throughout the day we god another 1/2 inch of snow. On Monday we had an ice storm in the evening with about a 1/2 inch of ice falling. Tuesday it warmed up with sunny skies and 40 degrees and the snow began to melt. By Wednesday most of the snow was melted and then we had random, very random, lightening and thunder. Thursday night we had severe thunderstorms with strong winds, and in one county just to the north of us by about an hour they had a confirmed tornado and all the streams and rivers are flooding. Crazy weather in just 1 week and I hear tale that by tonight we could have another snow storm.

In Homeschool this week we were very eclectic as well. We were still working through Olympic study but also turning some of our focus back to regular studies.

Bible:

Continuing his study of Saul and David, he learned about mercy this week. He learned that David spared Saul’s life a second time and that he honored God in doing so because he recognized God’s control. Little Man also was able to recall from his lesson in the Greek alphabet (see below) the correlation of the alphabet and Christ’s declaration that he is the Alpha, the Omega, the Beginning and the End. We had a really good discussion about what that means for his own life.

Reading:

He read a few more books about the Olympics; On the Hockey Team, DK Super guides Snowboarding, and he finished reading 100 Unforgettable Moments in Winter Olympics.

Math:

I turned him back to Khan Academy and he worked on some mastery challenges this week. He amazes me so much. I don’t mean to keep lauding how great he is at math, but being that I am not good at math, I just am amazed at his skill. Keeping in mind that he had to start mastery levels over at the beginning of this year all of these percentages for each of the “grade” levels has been since September!

Science:

He watched one of the NBC video’s of The Science of the Olympics. This week he took a look at Bobsled science. I mean, he’s a boy, it’s a bobsled and a giant frozen track. Need I say more? Well O.K. friction, momentum, acceleration, gravity. O.K. enough said.

History:

For his Olympic history lessons learned about the first Olympics, studying the various competitions in which the Greeks engaged. He also took a look at the Greek alphabet, which he loved. He really is interested in languages and I really wish I were more skilled in this area. I”vet tried a few different options, but inevitably I find the time constraints to be a hindrance when it comes to this area. I really need to think.

Gym:

We started the 4th quarter of gym on Monday. Little man was excited to see some friends that he hadn’t seen in a while. I had to chuckle a little when I saw him and his buddies huddled together before it was time for their age group to have class. It’s their own little homeschool tribe. They also had a chance to play kickball in gym and they all ended up on the same team and won, which was super exciting for Little Man.
