Unexpected “Field” Study

If you are a regular reader at the academy then you know we are studying Ornithology in science this year, (that means we are studying birds) using Exploring Creation with Zoology 1; Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day. We have a feeder just outside our classroom window. So whenever we are in school we can see the birds flitting in and out.
We live in Ohio and the temperature has dropped quite a bit in the past few days. This has done a couple of things. 1. It has increased the activity at our feeder. 2. We are having school in the family room or dining room instead of the classroom. We heat the house with a wood-burner. When the temp. drops we need to burn more wood to keep the temp. steady. To counter this we close off unnecessary rooms and stick with the main rooms of the house. Thus, we bring school into those rooms and close off the classroom.
Today, Little Man went into the classroom to get something. He was met with an unexpected surprise. A wren! Aparently when Beloved had gone outside through the basement door he left the door open for a few moments, a wren flew in. The classroom is next to the room with the basement door and the little wren was hanging out in there. Probably trying to figure out how to get through the window. When Little Man opened the door, the wren flew into the family room.
He was so excited to see a bird IN the house. Beloved carefully coaxed it back outside. I wish I would have thought to grab a camera and get a picture of the lovely little thing, but alas, I didn’t think of it until after it flew outside.
So instead, I had Little Man do a field drawing. Pretty good work for an unexpected “field” study. 😉
