Kings of Israel a Biblical Board Game

I love a good board game. When I was a kid, we sat around the table playing all kinds of games. It didn’t matter if it was a board game or card game. In fact, it didn’t matter if it was a real game or one we made up. One game we liked to play was Who Am I? a Bible game where daddy would ask us a series of questions about a person in the Bible and each question would be a bit easier than the last. Of course, we (my siblings and I) wanted to get the answer right on the first try. But we rarely was able to do…

    4 Books for Homeschool Libraries

I’m a book junkie. Most homeschool moms that I know are too. So, when I was given an opportunity to join the DK Books Blog team I was super thrilled! It means I get to review, great DK Books and share my own thoughts and opinions with you, tell you about books which I think you might find to be valuable benefit to your homeschool or family, and expand my homeschool library at the same time.  This post contains affiliate ad links to external sites where products may be purchased. I received review copies of each of the books for the sole purposes of reviewing the material. All opinions expressed…

Learning Place Value with LEGO Re-Grouping Boards

Learning the value of numbers can be frustrating to some children. No sooner do they learn that 9 means there are 9 of an item when we move on to teach the value of the tens place. So the 9 in the tens value place means there are 90 of an item. Yep. I can see why it can be confusing! What we need to do is focus on the basics rather than the number in the spot. Showing a child what each spot looks like can help them to mentally piece together what the value of a place holder is. So seeing 95 or 195 in bulk can help…

    App Inspires Periodic Table Research

An Educational Game App That Teaches Chemistry “Mom!, did you know that helium is a super-fluid?” Jonathan asked me as we were driving one day. Me, giggling, “Oh Yeah? What else?” “The strange fluid can slip through gaps in glass molecules and drip out of an airtight container.” he excitedly shares. He then spent 30 minutes regaling me with facts and trivia about the elements of the periodic table. Just a couple of days before I had received a free download of the app, Atomidoodle, by Hero Factor Games, which is now available on Google Play for Android Devices, in addition to being available for iPad, for the purposes of doing this…

    Outsourcing Homeschool Math Curriculum

When I started homeschooling there was a giant looming cloud over my head. It was the what am I going to do about math cloud. For me, teaching a child with advanced learning abilities, specifically in math, I knew that day would come quickly and I would revisit it over and over again.  In fact, since Jonathan was about 7, he’s now 11, I’ve been concerned that my math skills just aren’t where they need to be for him to learn and grow as a mathematician. Each year I have stressed and worried over not being able to teach him at the level he needed. Often I found that if I simply provided…

    Thinking with Logic, Math Mysteries

Challenging Math Mysteries for Gifted Children Middle school aged children love a good mystery. At least, my middle school child does. Anytime they have an opportunity to solve something mysterious there is excitement. Couple a love for mysteries, a need for challenges, an ability to think logically and Math Logic Mysteries, by Marilynn L. Rapp Buxton, would be an excellent workbooks for your gifted homeschool resource library. When I first received Math Logic Mysteries, for free as a part of a blog review opportunity, from Prufrock Press I was excited to see how much my son loved them. The concept is truly simple. Solve some math equations based upon a series of clues…

    My Imperfectly Messy Homeschool Room

Caution! Learning Happens Here   Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links to products which may be purchased from external sites. I have visions of a perfect homeschool room in my dreams. A lovely space to work and learn and grow. I have visions of an organized space with exactly everything we need for homeschooling success. I dream of perfection. I’ve shared images with you of our space and how it’s the perfect space for a homeschooling family. It is. But, the reality is our perfect space is an imperfectly messy homeschool room more often than it is clean and organized. In seven years of homeschooling I we have collected a…
