Training My Child in the Spirit

As a Christian, one who fervently believes in the sovereignty of the power and omniscience of God in Heaven, how could I do anything but teach my son spiritual things? To do otherwise would be hypocritical and deny the power of God. “Train up a child in the way that he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.” – Proverbs 22:6 But how can one know which way to train up that child?” “And you, fathers, do now provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” – Ephesians 6:4 There it is. The only resource…

    Training up in Worship: Discipline

There comes a time in every training up when a child will need to be disciplined. As parents we are responsible to teach, train and encourage our children in proper behavior. Additionally we are called to train them up in the “training and admonition of the Lord.” *Ephesians 6:4. Admonishment is for the purpose of instruction in righteousness. As often happens our children become anxious when expected to sit quietly for too long. Especially if they haven’t been trained from very early on to do such. Remember that consistency along with repetition are key elements in training a child in worship. They learn what is expected when we are consistently…

    Training up in Worship: Toys

This post will most likely step on some toes. If that’s the case, know that I write it from a heart that loves souls. This is the one where I talk about toys in the worship assembly. I’m going to share my opinion regarding them. I’m going to talk about when and what are appropriate and when they aren’t and what isn’t appropriate. If you have a true desire to grow as a parent, to grow in the spirit and to help your children to grow up into the Lord’s family, then I pray you will read with an open heart and mind. If you are comfortable with your status…

Training Up in Worship: Bible Lessons

Bible Training for Children Continuing on with training up in worship and setting the standard we come to helping our children to focus on and participating in the Bible lesson portion of worship. While singing, giving, prayer and passing of the communion trays show active participation getting a child to sit still for 20 or 30 minutes, or more, for an adult led/focused Bible lesson seems impossible. But remember what Jesus said: “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26b.    I understand where you are coming from. I really do. Years ago when we had foster children, I started out agreeing with that thought. Then one…

Training up in Worship: Set the Standard

In this series on Training Up in Worship. We’ve come to some practical advice time. I’ve laid some foundations. Training begins with infancy, requires repetition and begins at home.   I know you are curious for how to go about the practical application while in the assembly. I can hear what you are thinking. ‘It’s too hard with 2, 3 or more children.’  You are right that it is hard, but it isnt’  TOO hard. After all we are told… “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13. You as the parent just have to make the decision to set the standard and stick with it.…

    Worship Training Begins at Home

Training Up in Worship: Begins at Home Maybe you are thinking, “What’s the big deal? They are just kid’s let them be.” The big deal is these babies, toddlers and children will not remain children for very long. They will soon enough grow up and begin to form their own opinion, their own choices, and they will become responsible for their own actions. They will be responsible to the Lord God of Heaven for the choices they make. Your job as a parent is to train up or prepare their hearts for these choices. If you wait until you can reason with your child, it may be too late.   We…

Training Up in Worship with Repetition

Training Up in Worship Tip #2 Worship training requires consistent repetition, patience, and perseverance. Train Up Children to understand Worship with Repetition Worship training does not happen overnight. This training, once started, and at whatever age you begin, will require patience, persistence, perseverance, and consistent repetition on the part of the parents. In fact, if you wait until school age or later to begin worship training, you will be met with resistance, because by then the child has already formed in their own mind a set of acceptable expectations for their behavior in the assembly. This is why it is so important to begin training from infancy.  First we must remember that…
