This Week…. um, I Mean These Weeks
Getting Caught Up with This Weeks Post I’ve missed a few “This Week” postings. These last few weeks have been very busy and unexpected. Of course that throws schooling off balance. We’ve tried to keep up as best as possible. So, I’m sharing what we’ve been up to over the past several weeks. Bible: We are coming to the end of this years Bible Study Guide for All Ages curriculum. I’m both excited and sad. I LOVE this product. I love that I can trust the material to be sound in teaching and that I can adapt it to our chronology study of history. He has 1 more lesson for…

At the Convention
This past week I went to the Great Homeschool Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio. This was my 3rd year and I love being surrounded by several thousand other mom’s, dad’s and families who have chosen the home education path of life. There were nearly 300 vendors, and a couple hundred seminars. I enjoyed listening to Linda Lacour Hobar, author of The Mystery of History. It was amazing listening to her give a history lesson from Creation to Christ in just 45 minutes. Her passion for world history from a Biblical perspective is contagious. Shelah Gallagher, Ph.D. from the Institute for Educational Advancement discussed Understanding and Educating your gifted child. I was hoping that it would be…

Little Man Asks: “Mom! What is…”
Inquisitive Mind Wants to Know Little Man is constantly asking me questions that seem to come out of nowhere and throws me off guard, makes me think and often stumps me, requiring either further research or a frustrated, ‘go ask your dad.’ I want to share these questions with you, my readers, so you can share in the joy… This first posting will share several that have been asked over the last few weeks as best as I can remember them. 1. “Mom!, do you know what a cocklebur is?” I did not know what a cocklebur was, so we had to google it to find out. Here is the result.Wikipedia:…

This Week…Spring Cleaning Begins During Break
Spring Cleaning During Unexpected Spring Break This week we took a break from school. I don’t typically schedule spring break, however I had the opportunity to babysit for a brother in the church who happens to live 3 doors down. So we had visitors 3 days this week, Ben age 4 and his brother Nathaniel age 6. I was really surprised at how well the boys got along. I had imagined that Little Man would lose patience by the 3rd day. He can be quite possessive with his things. However, on Sunday evening he set aside things that he would prefer they not play with and we explained that everything else was…

Freedom to Choose
Common Core, The European Model of Education Several years ago, before I became a mother, I worked in a local jewelry store. At one point, we hired a man who was from Belgium. He was an interesting man and I enjoyed conversing with him about his European home. During the course of one conversation we discussed education. He told me about his children, who were still living in Belgium following a divorce. He was telling my how it was time for he and his ex-wife to choose his son’s education path. Not sure what he meant, I questioned him for more details. He explained that as a child was entering…

Training Up in Worship with Repetition
Training Up in Worship Tip #2 Worship training requires consistent repetition, patience, and perseverance. Train Up Children to understand Worship with Repetition Worship training does not happen overnight. This training, once started, and at whatever age you begin, will require patience, persistence, perseverance, and consistent repetition on the part of the parents. In fact, if you wait until school age or later to begin worship training, you will be met with resistance, because by then the child has already formed in their own mind a set of acceptable expectations for their behavior in the assembly. This is why it is so important to begin training from infancy. First we must remember that…

This Week…Schoolwork, then Fever.
Working Around Illness in the Homeschool Room Little Man’s New Desk Area. This week it seems that we just can’t stay well in our Academy. Out of nowhere on Wednesday Little Man came down with a bad cough and fever. Gratefully he got over it quickly, I am wondering if giving him Echinachea and Grape Seed had anything to do with just how quickly. It was almost 24 hours exactly. I’m thankful he did recover so fast because we began Lego Learning in our homeschool group today and I know he didn’t want to miss that. We had 2 1/2 days of good solid days of learning this week, plus, homeschool…

Mid-Year Classroom Redo
Updating for a Fresh Look with a Classroom Redo If you are a regular reader, you know that in the winter we burn firewood as our main heat source. This particular winter has been especially cold for Ohio. So in order to conserve heat, we closed off the classroom and moved the learning to the dining room. But the classroom quickly became cluttered since that happened the classroom has become a dumping ground for all things that didn’t have a home. It was seriously in need of a classroom redo. Embarrassingly here is the before photo: So on Saturday my friend Sam posted on facebook and twitter that her classroom…
